Thoughts come and go like the waves on the surface of the ocean. They come and go in an instant - never lasting more than a moment or two. It is important to recognize this so that one can gain control over ones thoughts.
It is ok to have negative thoughts, but it is important to recognize when you are identifying with them so you can let them go. If you continue to identify with negative or unhelpful thought, your sense of self will become distorted and eventually dysfunctional. This can lead to depression, anxiety, stress, anger, frustration and other problems in life.
